Sen. Fetterman hospitalized after sustaining injuries from fall

Sen. John Fetterman, D-Pa., is recovering in the hospital after sustaining minor injuries during a fall near his home Thursday. The senator’s spokesperson said in a statement on X that the fall happened during a morning walk and was a result of Fetterman’s ventricular fibrillation.

Fetterman will remain at the hospital for observation and so that doctors can “fine-tune” medication for his heart condition, according to his spokesperson. Ventricular fibrillation is a form of irregular heartbeat.

What are the details of the fall?

According to the statement, Fetterman became lightheaded before collapsing and hitting his face, sustaining minor injuries. In the statement, Fetterman joked, saying, “If you thought my face looked bad before, wait until you see it now!”

His spokesperson said he is doing well at the hospital and said he was grateful to the doctors, nurses and EMTs who helped.

Fetterman’s history of medical incidents

The senator has had several health incidents in the last few years. In 2022, during his Senate campaign, Fetterman suffered a stroke and doctors implanted a pacemaker and defibrillator due to his cardiomyopathy, a disease of the heart’s muscles.

His stroke left him with symptoms of an auditory processing disorder, which left him with trouble processing and understanding sound.

On Feb. 8, 2023, he was hospitalized after feeling lightheaded. However, this hospitalization was not related to his stroke, according to his office.

Then, on Feb. 16, 2023, he checked himself into Walter Reed Hospital for treatment regarding his clinical depression, something he said he has battled for his entire life. The hospital discharged him on March 31.

He details his struggles with depression in his new book “Unfettered,” saying his therapist and family helped him through a dark battle with the disease.
