Republicans attempt to censure Omar after comments on Charlie Kirk

Two House Republicans have introduced resolutions that aim to censure and remove Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., from her congressional committees. The resolutions are in response to remarks she made about Charlie Kirk during an interview with Mehdi Hasan on a Zeteo livestream, as well as social media posts she shared.

While discussing Kirk’s assassination with Hasan, Omar said she has empathy for the conservative influencer’s wife and children. However, she also pushed back against “completely pretend” narratives from conservatives that Kirk just wanted a “civil debate.” She specifically cited his views on guns, civil rights and George Floyd to support her argument.

Lawmakers behind the resolutions

Rep. Nancy Mace, R-S.C., introduced the resolution that specifically cites a video that Omar shared on her social media. It calls Kirk a “reprehensible human being” and accuses him of “spewing racist dog whistles” in his “last, dying words.”

Another resolution, introduced by Rep. Earl L. “Buddy” Carter, R-Ga., calls on Omar to be removed from the House Budget Committee and Education Committee “due to her false, vile, and disparaging remarks.”

“No one who justifies the assassination of someone with different political views than them deserves to sit on a committee. Ilhan Omar openly used language that incites violence toward her political opponents,” Carter told Fox News. “Committees are for serious lawmakers, not hate-spewing politicians.”

According to The Washington Post, Mace’s resolution is expected to come to the House floor by Thursday. It is unclear if it has the votes to pass.

Omar’s response

In response to Mace’s resolution, Omar called Mace “an unhinged person” and the resolution “deranged.” She said that “not a single quote in the resolution is attributed to me” and said “it is somebody else’s words she wants to censure me for.”

A spokesperson for Omar defended the comments made to Hasan in a statement, The Post reports.

“Congresswoman Omar was one of the first to condemn Charlie Kirk’s murder. She explicitly expressed her sympathies and prayers to his wife and children,” said Jacklyn Rogers, who serves as Omar’s communications director. “She condemned the assassination and has routinely condemned political violence, no matter the political ideology. The same can’t be said about those who authored these resolutions.”

In response to Omar’s rebuttal, Mace texted The Post. The text read: “Only 28 members of the House have ever been censured, and we can’t wait to make Ilhan Omar No. 29.”

Past Republican efforts against Omar

Republicans have often criticized Omar for her stance on Israel. In 2023, in a vote along party lines, Republicans removed her from the House Foreign Affairs Committee after accusing her of “repeated antisemitic and anti-American” comments.

Calls for discipline

The resolutions come as Republicans call for discipline against those who express joyful reactions to Kirk’s killing.

As Straight Arrow News reported, one Republican South Carolina state lawmaker has called on Clemson University to fire all three employees accused of sharing social media posts allegedly celebrating the death of Kirk or face legislation that defunds the school.
