A federal immigration agent shot a person Wednesday morning in Minneapolis, according to local news reports from the area. Officials have not released details of the shooting, but hundreds of local and federal law enforcement officials reportedly surrounded the scene of the shooting.
Witnesses told KARE 11 news that a federal agent shot someone and first responders began life-saving measures. The station did not report the person’s condition.
Minneapolis officers called the area a “crime scene” as they taped off the area where it happened.
The shooting happened after the Department of Homeland Security deployed more than 2,000 Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers to the city in the “largest DHS operation ever.”
A witness who spoke to local CBS News affiliate WCCO said she heard two gunshots and then a car crash.
“I see a red truck, airbag inflated with blood all over it and a woman on the side of the road, and the ambulance trying to come through,” she said.
The witness said the shooting victim was a mother “trying to flee from ICE agents.” Officials have not confirmed who the victim was or why the shooting occurred.
Public response to the shooting
Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz said on X that his aides were trying to gather information on “an ICE related shooting.”
“We will share information as we learn more,” Walz wrote. “In the meantime, I ask folks to remain calm.”
Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey called on ICE to leave the city immediately.
“The presence of federal immigration enforcement agents is causing chaos in our city,” Frey wrote on X.
“We stand rock solid with our immigrant and refugee communities,” he added.
WCCO said that federal agents used chemical irritants on protesters who gathered at the scene following the shooting. They said protesters throwing snowballs at federal vehicles prompted the response.
The local affiliate said it appeared that federal agents left the scene and local law enforcement stepped up for crowd control. Police set up metal gates between protesters.
The city will hold a press conference at noon to discuss the shooting.
This is a developing story and more information will be added as it becomes available.
