A longtime supporter of President Donald Trump and backer of the MAGA movement went on the offensive this weekend against the president and his GOP allies in Congress. Sean Davis, co-founder of The Federalist, a conservative online news outlet, launched a rare attack against Trump and called on the GOP to “wake up” before the midterms if they hope to retain control of Congress.
“I don’t know who is advising congressional Republicans on strategy right now, but … whoever it is has an IQ barely approaching room temperature,” Davis wrote.
Davis argued that Republicans have “no plans” or “vision” and questioned whether Americans would vote for them a year from now. He also urged Trump to “ditch the foreign policy crap” and “focus on the economy.” Davis added that the president looks “weak and rudderless.”
The former Daily Caller CFO also expressed frustration with student loan debt and questioned whether the “American Dream” was truly obtainable for young voters, including owning a home.
Davis warned that if Republicans failed to focus on issues of affordability for middle class Americans, it could cost them in the 2026 midterms. He called on Republicans to “wake up, because right now their nightmare is only beginning if they don’t start making massive changes.”
Trump pushes back against affordability concerns
Trump has repeatedly touted his economic policies as being successful for the American people. He recently claimed that concerns over health care premiums, affordable housing and groceries were cons by Democrats to manufacture opposition against him.
“I don’t want to hear about affordability,” Trump said late last week. He noted that the cost of Thanksgiving dinner at Walmart will be 25% cheaper this year, despite grocery prices reportedly being nearly 3% higher this year than last. Trump’s claim came from a prepackaged Thanksgiving meal basket from the retail giant. Analysts contend the claim is misleading because this year’s version has fewer items and different products that make it more affordable.
Trump’s remarks follow announcements by retailers of price hikes, reportedly caused in part by tariffs, fewer supplies and higher manufacturing costs.
A poll this summer by AP-NORC showed that nearly 90% of Americans were concerned about rising grocery prices, with more than half of respondents classifying it as a “major source of stress.”
The president’s comments came amid a government shutdown where federal workers have gone without pay and food assistance benefits have been halted for more than 40 million people.
Davis frustrated with some portrayals of his remarks
Several media outlets took note of Davis’ critique. Mediate labeled the post as a “condemnation” and “scorched earth attack” on the president.
Davis took issue with that characterization, saying on X, “It’s not a condemnation, you absolute retards. It’s a call for a course correction. Learn to read.”
Davis’ remarks come after Democratic victories
Davis’ warning comes just days after Democrats scored significant election wins in California, Virginia, New Jersey and New York City, where Democratic Socialist Zohran Mamdani won handily.
Other Republicans express concerns with party’s direction
Davis isn’t the only MAGA ally to recently go after the GOP. Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, a longtime Trump supporter, has recently broken with the party on several issues. She also warned the GOP about current economic circumstances for many American families, leading them to vote Democratic in the 2026 midterms.
“I can’t see into the future, but I see Republicans losing the House if Americans are continuing to go paycheck-to-paycheck,” she told Semafor.
Recent NBC News exit polls show affordability appeared to be a driving issue for many voters, along with frustration with the Trump administration, and some political analysts argue it played a role in recent Democratic gains around the country.
“It’s clearer than ever that affordability needs to be the centerpiece of the Democrats’ message going into the midterms,” Andrew Koneschuscky, a political communications expert, told AFP.
