A new Fox News poll contains almost exclusively bad news for President Donald Trump. The poll found that 76% of Americans have a negative view of the national economy, and 46% say Trump’s economic policies have hurt their personal finances.
Almost twice as many of the survey respondents blamed Trump for current economic conditions rather than former President Joe Biden.
Trump’s overall approval rating also dropped, even among core supporters such as men, white voters and people without college degrees. Just 41% of those surveyed said he is doing a good job, while 58% disapproved of his performance.
His approval rating was 5 percentage points lower than in September and only slightly higher than the low point of his first term.
The Fox News poll came as another survey — conducted by NPR, PBS and Marist University — shows Democrats gaining momentum heading toward next year’s midterm elections.
Fox News poll details
The poll took a deep dive into affordability issues. It found that 85% say the cost of groceries has gone up in the past year, 78% say their utility bills are higher and 67% have seen health care costs increase.
The survey also showed that, by double-digit margins, Americans think Democrats are more likely than Republicans to lower prices and raise wages.
“The situation isn’t complicated,” said Republican pollster Daron Shaw, who helps run the Fox News poll with Democrat Chris Anderson. “People are struggling to afford necessities and blaming those in charge.”
Neither side scored well when it comes to the recent government shutdown.
Among those polled, 62% disapproved of Trump’s handling of the shutdown. At the same time, 64% faulted Democrats in Congress.
One of the few bright spots in the poll for Trump involved the key issue of immigration.
Survey respondents believe Republicans have a better plan to secure the border (by 29 percentage points), deal with illegal immigrants (by 16 points) and reduce crime (by 14 points).
Fox News conducted the poll from Nov. 14 to 17. It has a margin of error of 3 percentage points.
Democrats with big lead
Meanwhile, the new NPR/PBS/Marist College poll indicates Democrats have a big lead when it comes to possibly swinging the balance of power in Congress.
Fifty-five percent of those polled said they would be more likely to vote for a Democrat for Congress than a Republican. NPR says that represents the largest Democratic advantage since November 2017 during Trump’s first term.
A year later, NPR notes, Democrats gained 40 House seats in the midterm elections.
The poll was conducted from Nov. 10 to 13 and has a margin of error of 3 percentage points. It suggests chances are good for a major shift in Congress after the November 2026 elections.
Republicans currently have a 219-214 majority in the House with two vacancies. Democrats would only need to flip a few seats to take control of the House and potentially blunt the Trump agenda in the last two years of his presidency.
