2 dead, 8 injured after shooting at Brown University

Multiple people were shot in the area of Brown University, police in Providence, Rhode Island, said on Saturday. Brown University previously sent out an alert warning of an active shooter near the Barus & Holley Engineering building.

“This is an active investigation,” Providence police said. “Please shelter in place or avoid the area until further notice.” The first call to police came in just after 4 pm. Officials say they have not recovered the weapon.

Speaking at press conference, Providence Mayor Brett Smiley shared 10 people were transported to the hospital. Two died on the way there. Eight are listed in critical but stable condition. Smiley would not confirm if the victims are students.

Although the school previously said a suspect was in custody, the Brown University Emergency Information System later issued a new alert stating that police are still searching for the suspect. Brown University President Christina Paxson said that the Department of Public Safety was informed at one point that there was an individual in custody, but they were determined not to be the shooting suspect after questioning.

Police can only describe the suspect as a male wearing all black.

Multiple exams were scheduled in the engineering building from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., the university said.

“We can confirm that support services are on site,” Brown University said. “We have also relocated students to get support services at a secure location.”

President Donald Trump spoke to the press following his return to the White House. He reiterated he had been briefed on the situation and federal authorities are involved.

Agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives’ Boston Field Division are also responding to the scene.

“This is a day that we hoped never would come to our community. It is deeply devastating for all of us,” Paxson said in a message to the university. “We are grateful to law enforcement for their immediate response and their ongoing work to ensure the safety of our community. Please continue to take all steps to be safe.”
