Kash Patel refutes ‘mass confusion’ claims in FBI’s Charlie Kirk investigation

FBI Director Kash Patel defended his handling of the investigation into Charlie Kirk’s assassination after receiving criticism for incorrectly announcing the suspect was in custody hours after the shooting. Reports indicate that senior members of the Trump administration and rank-and-file FBI agents have low confidence in his leadership

The retracted arrest announcement

Patel specifically addressed his incorrect announcement that the shooter was in custody.

“It’s important that this FBI is as transparent as possible, without jeopardizing investigations,” Patel told the Senate Judiciary Committee Tuesday morning.

Six hours after Kirk was shot, Patel posted on X, “The subject for the horrific shooting today that took the life of Charlie Kirk is now in custody.”

One hour, forty minutes later, he had to retract that post.

“The subject in custody has been released after an interrogation by law enforcement. Our investigation continues and we will continue to release information in interest of transparency,” Patel wrote.

Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., told Patel that he “sparked mass confusion” with the inaccurate claim.

“Mr. Patel was so anxious to take credit for finding Mr. Kirk’s assassin that he violated one of the basics of effective law enforcement at critical stages of an investigation — shut up and let the professionals do their job,” Durbin said.

Suspect’s father talks to law enforcement

Patel took credit for releasing videos and photographs of the alleged assassin, which he said led the suspect’s father to speak with authorities.

“That is the FBI working with the public as a promise, being transparent and providing critical information along the way in the manhunt for the suspect, or suspects, involved in Charlie’s assassination,” Patel said.

He also thanked his bosses.

“I want to thank President Trump and the Attorney General Pam Bondi for their unwavering support and commitment of resources to this and all investigations,” Patel said.

Patel also shared some of the FBI’s law enforcement successes since he became director. That includes gang arrests, drug seizures and the apprehension of four fugitives on the FBI’s top ten list. Patel added that the United States is on track to have the lowest murder rate in modern American history.

Trump still supports FBI Director

For now, President Trump is backing Patel.

“I am very proud of the FBI,” Trump told Fox News. “Kash, and everyone else, they have done a great job.”

Fox reported that President Trump’s allies are circulating word that contingency plans are being made for Patel’s ouster.

“The White House, Bondi, [Deputy Attorney General] Blanche have no confidence in Kash,” a source told Fox

Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey left his position to become the new co-deputy director of the FBI this week. That would make him eligible to lead the bureau if the director is fired or resigns.
