Shipping gifts this holiday season is about to get more expensive. The U.S. Postal Service is temporarily raising prices on a number of package services beginning Sunday, Oct. 5.
The USPS first signaled its intent to increase prices in August, and the change will impact Priority Mail, Priority Mail Express, Parcel Select and USPS Ground Advantage Services.
How much will prices increase?
Customers can expect anywhere from a $0.30 increase to a $16 increase for shipment of items depending on the type of mail, zone and weight of the package. The price increases will begin after midnight CT on Oct.5 and remain in effect until midnight CT on Sunday, Jan. 18, 2026.
Why is USPS raising prices?
USPS told ABC News that the increased fees are to “help cover extra handling costs and bring prices for the Postal Service’s commercial and retailer customers in line with competitive practices.”
USPS recommend shipping deadlines
The postal service also encourages customers to ship packages by mid-December to ensure online delivery.
The recommended deadlines to send parcels within the continental United States are as follows:
- Wednesday, Dec 17, USPS Ground Advantage and First-Class Mail
- Thursday, Dec. 18, Priority Mail
- Saturday, Dec. 20, Priority Mail Express
For items to other U.S. states and territories, the dates are:
- Tuesday, Dec. 16, USPS Ground Advantage
- Wednesday, Dec. 17, First Class Mail
- Thursday, Dec. 18, Priority Mail
- Saturday, Dec. 20, Priority Mail Express
