‘Multiple’ dead after massive explosion at Tennessee military explosives plant

Multiple people are dead and nearly 20 are unaccounted for after a massive explosion at a military weapons plant in rural Tennessee. Authorities say the explosion happened at about 7:50 a.m. Friday in Hickman County, just outside of Nashville.

The incident happened at the Accurate Energetic Systems plant. The plant manufactures explosives for the military, along with the space, demolition and oil industries.

Local authorities said there are “multiple” deaths and that they are searching for 19 others who were inside the building when the explosion happened. According to local news outlets, officials have expressed concern about potential secondary explosions and advised the public to stay clear of the area.

Local news station WSMV said the explosion was so large that the plume of smoke was on its weather radar. Doorbell video from miles away also captured the noise of the blast.

According to officials, the explosion was so large that it encompassed an entire building at the site. Federal authorities, including the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI), have opened an investigation into the blast. Officials said they expect to remain in the area for the next few days as they work to determine what triggered the explosion.

This is a developing story and more information will be added as it is provided.
