Trump, Hegseth speak to top military officials at Quantico

President Donald Trump and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth spoke to top military officials in Quantico, Virginia, on Tuesday morning. Last week, Hegseth ordered every one-star general and above to report for what was billed as a short speech on “warrior ethos.”

Hegseth’s new military standards

Hegseth kicked off the meeting by calling the current status of the U.S. military “woke.” He said too many military leaders have been promoted because of race or gender. Hegseth also noted that all military members should be held to the same standards, regardless of their race or gender.

Hegseth introduced new fitness tests for every military member, which they’ll have to take twice a year.

“If you do not meet the male level physical standards for combat positions, cannot pass a  PT test or don’t want to shave and look professional, it’s time for a new position or a new profession,” Hegseth said.

He added that the move is not an effort to prevent women from serving; he just wants to ensure everyone meets military standards. He said if the changes result in fewer women enlisting, “so be it.”

In addition to fitness requirements, Hegseth said shaving standards will be restored.

“No more beardos, the era of rampant and ridiculous shaving profiles are done,” Hegseth said.

Hegseth’s military review

The comments on fitness come months after the Pentagon launched a force-wide review of physical fitness, grooming and appearance policies.

The goal of the review was to eliminate gender-based differences in combat roles and promote a single, high standard for all service members.

Back in March, Hegseth posted on X saying the U.S. had “allowed standards to slip.”

The spring review and Quantico announcements follow Hegseth’s January push to restore warrior ethos, rebuild the U.S. military and reestablish deterrence.

Trump to speak at 9 a.m. EST

The president is expected to speak around 9 a.m. EST. Straight Arrow News will provide updates.

Prior to the event, Trump said he would talk about “how well we’re doing militarily … being in great shape … about a lot of good, positive things.”

Meeting controversy

Tuesday’s meeting garnered considerable attention when it was announced, even drawing criticism.

It’s not uncommon for the Secretary of Defense to meet with senior military leaders. However, as SAN has previously reported, meetings of this size and on this short notice are unprecedented.

With hundreds of leaders summoned from around the world, critics expressed concerns. They claim the cost, the risk of having so many senior officers in one place, and the timing all raise serious concerns.
